Champions Park House Fire

At 5:45 pm on Sunday, 8/8/2010, the Champions Emergency Services District responded to the report of a house on fire from a lightning strike in the 6700 block of Coral Ridge in the Champions Park subdivision.  Crews from the Champions fire station were clearing the scene of another emergency in the 5300 block of FM 1960 West when the call went out, and those crews responded to the incident.  Dispatchers reported receiving multiple calls on the fire, so two additional mutual aid engine companies were notified to respond as a precaution. An engine and ladder truck from Champions Emergency Services District arrived six minutes after the original dispatch to find smoke visible from a two-story residence.  Crews forced entry into the house and located active fire in the attic area. Crews quickly knocked down the fire with a hose line as other responding companies from Cypress Creek, Klein, Ponderosa, and Northwest fire departments arrived to assist with support operations.  Crews confirmed that the fire appeared to be the result of a lightning strike, but the fire was located in a difficult to access area of the attic.  As such, crews conducted extensive overhaul operations including removal of roofing material and insulation to ensure thorough extinguishment of the fire.  Thanks to the quick response and adept decision-making by the responders, property damage to the residence was minimized.

Greenwood Forest House Fire

At 3:30pm on Sunday, 7/31/2010, the Champions Emergency Services District responded to the report of a house on fire in the 5300 block of Boyce Springs in Greenwood Forest.  Crews from the Champions fire station arrived 4 minutes later to find smoke visible from a 2-story residence.  Active fire was quickly located inside a wall on the rear of the residence that had extended into a small attic space above the room.  Champions’ personnel acted swiftly to expose the fire by removing wall and ceiling material, extinguishing the fire before it reached the main portion of the residence.  Arriving automatic aid companies from Ponderosa, Klein, and Cypress Creek fire departments responded and assisted Champions crews by checking for fire extension, ventilating the building, and assisting with other support operations.  Thanks to the rapid response and swift actions by the responding crews, the home was saved and property damage was kept to a minimum.

Improved ISO Rating

Harris County ESD 29 has been informed that effective June 1, 2010 the ISO Property Protection Class rating has been changed to a three (3) for the ESD 29 territory.  This is an improvement from the previous four (4) rating.

The rating system evaluates water supplies, emergency communications, and fire department capabilities to assign your property a fire "risk" category.  The scale is from 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest risk.

Each homeowner and business owner should verify that their insurance company has updated their ISO rating to a three (3) effective June 1, 2010.  If not, it could cost you more money on your insurance premiums.
